A dental implant is a device (usually a titanium screw) used with an artificial tooth to replace missing teeth. Unlike a dental bridge, a dental implant is permanent. The History of Dental Implants Replacing missing teeth is something that science has been trying to do for thousands of years. The ability to provide dental implants was not discovered however, until 1952 and quite by accident. In the university town of Lund, Sweden, Professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark discovered that it was impossible to recover the bone-anchored titanium microscopes he was using in his research. The titanium had apparently bonded permanently to the bone tissue. Dr. Brånemark demonstrated that titanium could be incorporated into living bone without long-term soft tissue inflammation or ultimate fixture rejection. The first practical use of this discovery was the implantation of titanium roots in a toothless patient in 1965. To this day, the non-removable dental implants inserted for this patient, are still functioning perfectly. How a Dental Implant Procedure Works The creation of a dental implant begins by inserting a hole into the jawbone, and then screwing a titanium screw into the new hole. This process must include a short amount of healing, followed by placing a newly designed tooth on top of it. The new tooth is made out of either porcelain material, or a metal with the porcelain material on top of it. Who is a good candidate for Dental Implants in our New York office? A dental implant can be used in any situation where a patient is missing their teeth. Our cosmetic dentists office provides dental implants for patients who were formerly wearing removal dentures or "plates" because they were missing all or most of their teeth. We also provide dental implants for patients who have lost only one tooth or just a group of teeth, due to either dental decay or periodontal disease. A typical example would be a person who needs dental implants because they have lost a single tooth due to trauma, an accident or sports injury. Facts about Dental Implants
